During Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month, we celebrate the unique and diverse histories, cultures and languages of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities in the UK, and also the considerable and outstanding contributions made by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people and communities to wider society.
This year, the theme for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month is 'Weaving Journeys: A celebration of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller lives, histories and cultures'.
Throughout the month, celebrations will take place across the country to give people the opportunity to learn about the rich, cultural contribution these communities have made across the centuries.
Gypsies, Roma and Travellers are the largest ethnic minority community in the European Union with over 12 million people and they have enriched our culture in many different ways. Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month will help challenge myths and break down barriers.
In the UK, they are recognised ethnic minority communities and number 500,000 or more.
Did you know? There are different types of Travellers:
Our Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) and Youth Service teams are taking our Traveller Wagon exhibition to schools, which will include various activities to engage and raise awareness of Traveller culture, traditions and heritage amongst our young people in Salford.
The wagon will also be outside Eccles Library on Thursday 22 June (9am to 3pm), and at Cleavley Community Forest Garden on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 June, so please do pop down if you can.
