Supported internship for young people

Supported internships are for young people aged 16 to 24, with an Education, Health and Care Plan, who want to get into paid employment.

Internships are based with an employer and help you to develop the necessary workplace skills and experience to go on to paid employment. Work placements are individualised and based on a young person’s strengths and vocational interests to make sure they are matched to the right placement for them.

Internships normally run over a 12 month period, often starting in September, and include unpaid work placements on rotation. You will also work towards the achievement of accredited qualifications, including English, maths and employability, and build skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and travelling independently to and from placements

The Supported Internship Journey

There are six steps in the journey and these are outlined below.

Step one

Apply from March onwards for an internship. Complete the initial assessments and a meeting with the internship provider to check suitability. Places can fill up quickly, so early applications are advised through the provider’s own website.

Step two

Complete a work development plan and employer site visit.

Step three

Complete pre-employment documentation for the employer (for example ID, DBS checks and travel training if needed).

Step four

Complete the induction and training and meet the placement staff.

Step five

Complete the work placement. Interns are supported by a job coach and workplace mentor. Placement one will be from September to December, placement two will be from January to April and placement three will be from April to June.

Step six

Reach the end goal – employment with monitoring support.
