Salford Quays: Better connections to the quays

Connecting Salford Quays across Salford and beyond has always been a core principle running alongside development at the Quays. New active travel links, bridges, Metrolink, bus improvements and new car parks have helped the quays become the vibrant space supporting the new growth.

The network needs to accommodate the daily coming and going but also cope with match day, theatre shows and other events that drive large audiences.

Recent projects to enhance the experience of arrival to and from the quays have included a new Metrolink line through Trafford and also the Traffic Road scheme that delivered segregated cycle links, including Cyclops junctions. To help manage some of the anti social drivers and improve life for the residents, a traffic calming scheme has also been completed.

Work is ongoing across all modes to further improve capacity and links.

This includes, but isn’t exhaustive:

Better bus routes:

Salford City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester have been working to deliver an improved bus service in Salford with multiple infrastructure upgrades rolled out across the city over the last few years. From a better road surface, dedicated bus lanes, upgraded bus stops and shelters to improve reliability, to high quality pedestrian and cycling facilities to make accessing public transport more inclusive and easier for everyone.

Salford Crescent and MediaCity is a busy route connecting two strategic locations in the city. They are Salford's biggest hubs for media and technology, learning and employment, with plans for further development and growth. We believe there is a strong requirement for a high-quality and reliable public transport service connecting those two destinations.

Early consultation was completed in December 2023 and designs are now progressing to see what can be achieved.

Clipper’s Bridge:

A new bridge at Clipper’s Quay, connecting with Trafford Wharfside has long been an aspiration by the city council and the council is developing designs to pursue future funding for delivery.

Metrolink/Crescent Metrolink:

Working with TfGM options around a new Metrolink line connecting MedaCity and Salford Quays with Salford Crescent will open up new opportunities to link to the west of the city by rail as well as the national rail infrastructure. Options are currently being explored; the process from start to finish is likely to take about a decade in line with other delivery of new Metrolink lines delivered elsewhere in Greater Manchester.
