Eccles Old Road resurfacing works

What’s happening?

Eccles Old Road is a major route providing access between the M602 motorway, Salford Royal Hospital and the A6 Broad Street towards Manchester. The stretch between Half Edge Lane and Edgehill Road is in a very poor condition so we need to resurface the road as part of regular highway maintenance. The works will provide a smooth and safe new surface on the carriageway, paint white lines, and other road markings.

As you may be aware, this section of Eccles Old Road saw the bus lane suspended in both directions in August 2016. The maintenance works will reflect this arrangement making all lanes accessible to cars at all times. A Traffic Regulation Order relating to the permanent removal of the bus lanes will be advertised in September. For more information, please visit our traffic orders page.

When will it take place?

To do this work, we need to close Eccles Old Road westbound (towards Gilda Brook Roundabout) on weeknights, from Monday 16 September to Friday 25 October, between 7pm and 6am. The closure will be from Edgehill Road to Gilda Brook Roundabout, in that direction only. The eastbound side (towards Manchester) will remain open at all times. Some of the side roads will also need to be closed on some nights, depending on which area we are working in. The below map shows the extent of the closure on Eccles Old Road.

What’s involved?

To resurface the road, we need to prepare it by removing some of the existing surface before applying the new one. This is the noisiest bit of the work. We also need to reset gutter covers and manhole lids as well as repaint white lines and other road markings. These works will be less disruptive.

What is ‘the noisiest work’?

The noisiest work includes the removal of the top road surface and any use of mechanical ‘breakers’ or ‘saw cutting’ for breaking out hard materials like concrete. We aim to finish this work by 12am on every shift, wherever possible. Please note other types of disruption after 12am may include reverse beepers, running engines and flashing lights.

Why are you doing this work at night?

The works have been carefully planned to minimise disruption to local traffic and the wider network, ensuring people can get home from work during the busiest times without having to follow a diversion or additional delays. We believe it is the most effective and balanced approach that allows the works to be completed relatively quickly with some breaks for residents, but without causing a gridlock on the highway network.

What’s the diversion?

The diversion will be via Langworthy Road/ Eccles New Road and will be clearly signposted when the one-way closure on Eccles Old Road is in place.

Will bus services be affected?

Bus services will be diverted during the night shifts, between 7pm and 6am with bus stops suspended during those hours. For full details and information regarding any specific services, please visit Transport for Greater Manchester.

Vehicle parking on Eccles Old Road

Please note that due to the nature of the works, we will need full access to the closed areas and parking during working hours on Eccles Old Road will not be possible. We kindly ask the affected residents and visitors to use alternative parking in work-free areas and Eccles Old Road side roads during the closures, between 7pm and 6am. Failure to follow these arrangements will result in delays. Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience and we would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Access for residents

Resident access will be maintained at all times, however there may be some hold-ups while the workers move equipment out of the way and make the area safe to pass. Throughout the night works, marshals will be on site at all times to cover for emergency access within the working area.

Will there be access to the Salford Royal Hospital between 7pm and 6am?

Access to the hospital will remain open at all times. For visitors approaching from the westbound side of Eccles Old Road, there will be a clearly signposted diversion on weeknights between 7pm and 6am.

Please note emergency services will be allowed access through the works area at all times.

Daytime traffic restrictions

Please note there will be no daytime traffic restrictions during the works.

Who can I contact about these works?
