1: Tackling poverty and inequality

Salford Health Improvement Service has been instrumental in addressing poverty and inequality over the past two decades through numerous innovative initiatives. One of the key programs has been the 'Thrifty Plates' cooking on a budget scheme, which supports 170 residents annually. Participants receive slow cookers and learn how to prepare nutritious, affordable meals. This initiative not only enhances food security but also empowers individuals with practical skills to manage their limited resources more effectively.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the service played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of lockdowns on vulnerable residents. The Spirit of Salford Helpline, supported by the Health Improvement Service, facilitated essential services like shopping, medication collection, and delivery of food and energy vouchers. This programme helped over 1,750 residents maintain access to essential supplies and support, highlighting the service's commitment to ensuring no one is left behind during crises.

Health Improvement has also secured funding to tackle holiday hunger, providing food vouchers to 6,000 children on Free School Meals. This initiative addressed the gap in food provision during school holidays, ensuring that children from low-income families received adequate nutrition. Additionally, the Healthy Holiday Voucher Scheme specifically supported the Jewish community by providing kosher food vouchers, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in addressing food insecurity.

Another amazing programme Health Improvement have delivered  is the Warm Homes initiative, which identifies residents needing energy efficiency improvements. Through outreach and engagement, 250 residents received funding to enhance their homes' energy efficiency, reducing energy costs and improving living conditions.

The service's approach to tackling poverty and inequality extends to supporting families from diverse backgrounds. For instance, the recent support for families relocating from Hong Kong involves setting up activities and support groups, helping these new residents integrate into the community and access necessary resources.

Through these comprehensive efforts, the Salford Health Improvement Service has significantly contributed to reducing poverty and inequality, promoting social inclusion, and enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Salford.
