2: Creating healthy lives and quality care for all

Salford Health Improvement Service has dedicated itself to fostering healthy lives and ensuring quality care for all residents. One of the cornerstone programmes is the delivery of NHS Health Checks, aimed at preventing strokes and cardiovascular diseases. Since starting in 2011, the service has provided over 8,000 health checks, identifying health risks early and facilitating timely interventions.

In response to the growing need for mental health support, the service became trainers for Mental Health First Aid in 2018. This program equips people with the skills to recognize mental health issues and provide initial support, fostering a community that is better prepared to address mental health challenges.

Through, the service's involvement in the National Diabetes Prevention over 1,600 people have been screened, with 120 pre-diabetic patients identified, and enabling them to take preventive measures.
Health Improvements commitment to maternal and child health is evident through its support for breastfeeding mothers. In 2011, 770 mothers received peer support, and breastfeeding support groups were established in each neighbourhood. This initiative has been crucial in promoting breastfeeding, which offers numerous health benefits for both mothers and infants.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Health Improvement Service launched several innovative programs to support frontline workers and vulnerable populations. The Covid Risk Health Checks for Frontline Workers helped over 700 health and care workers, school staff, and other essential workers stay healthy and in work. Also, the service coordinated mass testing in schools, ensuring safe learning environments for students and staff.

The Health Improvement Service also focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles through various community-based programmes. The Salford Weigh Ahead healthy eating and weight support program, launched in 2018, has supported over 1,800 residents in achieving their weight loss goals. Also the Couch to 5k groups encourage physical activity, helping residents improve their fitness levels and overall health.

Through a range of engaging and diverse initiatives, the Salford Health Improvement Service has made significant strides in creating healthy lives and ensuring quality care for all. By addressing both physical and mental health needs, the service continues to enhance the wellbeing of Salford's residents, fostering a healthier, more resilient community.
