4: Building a fairer, greener, healthier Salford

Salford Health Improvement Service has been at the forefront of building a fairer, greener, and healthier Salford. One of the key initiatives is the establishment of Health Action Partnerships in each neighbourhood, promoting community-driven health improvements and ensuring that the unique needs of each area are addressed.

The service's efforts to promote environmental sustainability are evident through initiatives like the establishment of community orchards and outdoor gyms. These projects not only provide green spaces for physical activity but also enhance the urban environment, contributing to a greener Salford.

The Community Samba Drumming Group and the Boothstown Marina Cycling Pod scheme are other examples of programmes that promote physical activity while fostering community spirit. These initiatives encourage residents to engage in healthy activities in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Health Improvements outreach and engagement work during the COVID-19 pandemic played a crucial role in promoting public health measures and vaccination. By delivering over 500 outreach sessions and distributing 72,000 hygiene packs, the service ensured that residents had the resources and information needed to stay safe and healthy.

The Social Prescribing scheme, launched in 2015, is another significant programme that supports residents' holistic health. By connecting individuals with community resources and activities, the scheme addresses non-health factors that can impact on health and promotes overall wellbeing.

The service has looked to address food insecurity and promote healthy eating. The Thrifty Plates program and the Holiday Food and Activity program provide residents with access to nutritious food and the skills to prepare healthy meals. Additionally, the Warm Homes initiative supports energy efficiency improvements, reducing energy costs and improving living conditions for vulnerable residents.

Through these comprehensive efforts, Salford Health Improvement Service has made significant strides in building a fairer, greener, and healthier Salford. By addressing health, environmental, and social needs, the service continues to enhance the quality of life for all residents, promoting a more inclusive and sustainable future for Salford.
