Adoption is not always appropriate and some children cannot return home.
When this happens and a child or children cannot return home, a child may need a long term foster carer to provide permanence and stability in a caring and loving family environment. This could last into adulthood and independence.
A child may keep in contact with their birth family even though they are not able to live with them on a permanent basis.
A child in long term foster care may also keep in touch with brothers and sisters and this will be part of a contact plan.
